When I first walked up to number 38, I honestly thought I’d gotten the address wrong because it looks more like a renovated residential building than your typical hotel. But that’s actually what makes it work.

The location is honestly brilliant if you know Leipzig at all. You’re literally a five-minute walk from the HTWK campus, which explains why the lobby always has this low hum of international students checking in with oversized backpacks and terrible German pronunciation (I say this with love). The MDR broadcasting center is practically next door – you’ll probably spot some media types in the breakfast room looking way too polished for 7 AM. But here’s what I really love: you can walk to Karli (that’s Karl-Liebknecht-Straße for the uninitiated) in about eight minutes, and that’s where Leipzig’s soul really lives. All those indie cafes, vintage shops, and bars that don’t try too hard but somehow nail it every time.

The rooms are… well, they’re what you’d expect from a solid 4-star place, but with touches that feel more thoughtful than corporate. The beds are actually comfortable – not just hotel-room acceptable, but like, you might oversleep comfortable. There’s this weird attention to lighting that I appreciated; you know how most hotels make you choose between cave-dark or operating-room bright? Not here. Parking can be a bit of a headache during the semester – all those students with cars their parents bought them – but the staff knows the neighborhood parking tricks.

What really sold me though was stumbling back one evening around 11 PM after exploring the Südvorstadt bars (don’t skip Café Puschkin if you’re into that artsy, slightly pretentious scene), and the front desk guy actually gave me recommendations for late-night food that weren’t just “there’s a döner place.” He sent me to this little Vietnamese spot that stays open until midnight and honestly serves better pho than places twice the price in Berlin. That’s the kind of local knowledge that makes a difference.

The breakfast is solid – nothing Instagram-worthy, but they do this thing with local honey and bread from a bakery somewhere in the neighborhood that tastes like actual effort went into it. You’ll probably end up sharing a table with students, business travelers, and the occasional academic visiting the university. It creates this accidentally international atmosphere that feels more authentic than forced.

Look, if you want a generic business hotel experience, this probably isn’t your spot. But if you’re the type who actually wants to experience Leipzig rather than just sleep near it, and you appreciate when a place puts thought into the small stuff without making a big deal about it, then yeah – this works really well. Just book early during the semester; apparently word is getting out.

• Gute Wohnung in idelaer Lage – Tanja from Germany – 1 September 2024 (8/10)

  Die Lage war sehr gut: Bus in 5 Minuten , sowie die Karli oder Rewe 15 – 20 Minuten fußläufig. Auf der Karli viele Restaurants, super Eisladen "Eisbrennerei" – vegan. Direkt um die Ecke ein Späti, wo man auch Kleinigkeiten für den täglichen Bedarf bekommt. Die Wohnung selbst war mit genügende Küchenutensilien ausgestattet, Regenbrause und Kapselmaschine.
  Schon morgens konnte man gemütlich auf dem Balkon den Kaffee genießen.

  Die Wohnung ist sehr geräumig mit zwei großen Schlafzimmern. Dusche mit Regenbrause und normalem Duschkopf. Sehr gute Ausstattung mit Bügeleisen und Waschmaschine.
  Wir hatten uns sehr kurzfristig für die Übernachtung in Leipzig entschieden und konnten die Wohnung sofort beziehen. Alles war perfekt vorbereitet. Der Kontakt zum Vermieter war unkompliziert und sehr freundlich.
  Wir kommen gerne wieder!

  What could be improved: Direkt um die Ecke ist ein Späti. Da zieht es in unregelmäßigen Abständen schonmal lautere Leipziger an. Wer einen leichten Schlaf hat, sollte die Fenster schließen.

  Die Lage war sehr gut, zentral gelegen. Die Fewo war sehr geräumig, groß und gut eingerichtet. Balkon von zwei Räumen aus begehbar.
  
  Umgebung geräuscharm trotz zentraler Lage.
  
  Die Betten waren toll! Insgesamt auch sehr kinderfreundlich gestaltet. An viele Kleinigkeiten wurde gedacht (Tatü Boxen in jedem Raum, Kinderreisebetten vorhanden, Kinderhochstuhl).
  
  Mobiliär großzügig.
  
  Auch mit der Ankunft und Abreise hat alles einwandfrei funktioniert. Ebenso die Kommunikation mit dem Anbieter.
  
  Tolle Ausflugsziele in der Nähe (Sachsentherme, Markleeberger See, Zoo, toller Spielplatz für die Kids (Fliegenpilz)).
  
  Wir haben uns insgesamt sehr wohl gefühlt!

  What could be improved: Parkplatz vor der Unterkunft war nicht immer vorhanden.
  
  Fewo war insgesamt sauber, jedoch war der Boden nur dort gewischt/gesaugt wo kein Mobiliar stand. Durch das Spielen der Kinder war man immer mal auf der Suche nach Spielsachen und demzufolge war auch ein Blick unter Betten und Schränke unerlässlich. Dort sollte noch an der Sauberkeit gearbeitet werden. Viel Staub und auch Gegenstände von vorherigen Fewo-Nutzern waren ersichtlich (Socken unter dem Schrank, Zahnbürste hinter der Waschmaschine).
  In der Wohnung selbst, da Ergeschoss überall Sichtschutz an den Fenstern (sehr gut), außer in der Küche.
  
  Ein fester Platz für alle Haushalts-Reinigungsuntensilien wäre super, um nicht alles absuchen zu müssen. Ein großer Besen war hinter dem Kühlschrank vorhanden. Einen kleinen Besen und Kehrschaufel haben wir erst am letzten Tag hinter den Mülleimern entdeckt.
  
  Eine kleine Anleitung für Ofen (vorheizen) und Geschirrspüler (Programme) wären noch super und eine neue Verkleidung für den Kühlschrank sowie funktionierendes Licht in diesem würde die Küche noch etwas aufwerten.

  What could be improved: The host sent us a message urging us to transfer an additional amount to his account, allegedly to cover local taxes.
  The booking confirmation showed clearly that the tax was already included in the price we had paid. So they wanted us to pay the tax twice?! Besides, by law, it's the host's obligation to pay the tax, not the guest's.
  I recommend you ignore this message from the host. We did. Still, it left us with a bad feeling.

  Super Lage, sehr nah an der Karli im hippen Südviertel mit vielen schönen kleinen Läden. Die Wohnung war groß und sauber und hatte sogar einen kleinen Balkon.
