So I stumbled across the Residenz Hotel Leipzig while looking for something a bit off the beaten path in the Seehausen district, and honestly? It turned out to be one of those pleasant surprises you don’t expect from a 3-star place. The thing is, most people think Leipzig means staying right in the city center, but this spot on Residenzstraße gives you that local neighborhood feel while still being totally doable for getting around – you know what I mean? It’s not flashy or trying too hard, which I actually appreciated after dealing with some of those overly polished chain hotels.

What really struck me was how the staff seemed to genuinely know their stuff about Leipzig. The woman at reception (I think her name was Petra?) didn’t just hand me the usual tourist brochure nonsense – she actually told me which tram to catch to avoid the construction near the Hauptbahnhof and mentioned this little bakery around the corner that opens ridiculously early. The rooms themselves are… well, they’re exactly what you’d expect from a solid 3-star, but clean and comfortable with decent-sized windows that let in proper light. I mean, the decor isn’t going to win any awards, but there’s something refreshingly unpretentious about it. The beds are actually pretty good – firm enough that you don’t feel like you’re sinking into a marshmallow, and the shower pressure was surprisingly strong (always a win in my book).

Here’s the thing though – and this is where that 8-point rating makes total sense – it’s the little details that add up. The Wi-Fi actually works throughout the building, parking is straightforward and not some nightmare puzzle, and the breakfast (when I bothered to get up early enough) had proper local options alongside the standard continental stuff. The Seehausen area itself is quietly charming once you get used to it – more residential than touristy, which means you’ll hear actual German conversations at the nearby cafés instead of just other travelers. It’s about a 15-minute tram ride to get into the thick of things downtown, but honestly, after a long day of sightseeing, coming back to this quieter pocket felt like a relief. The only minor complaint I’d have is that the walls are a bit thin – I could hear my neighbors’ TV one night, but it wasn’t anything earplugs couldn’t handle. Look, if you’re the type who needs marble bathrooms and a concierge in a fancy uniform, this probably isn’t your spot. But if you want a genuine, no-nonsense place to sleep that won’t drain your budget and puts you in touch with how Leipzig actually lives and breathes? The Residenz Hotel gets it right.

  What could be improved: The room windows faced the side where the kitchen exit was located. The smells from the kitchen were very intense and it was impossible to open the window without all these smells ending up in your room.
  
  The soundproofing in the room is very weak. You can hear everything – what is happening in the hallway, what is happening downstairs in the hotel kitchen, someone carrying something, and so on. If you want to relax after a working day, then you will not be able to do this before 11 pm in my experience in this hotel.

  What could be improved: The personnel is awful! I had an important meeting in the city, woke up early in morning and asked the receptionist to call a taxi for 8.45am (I did it at 7am) and she told me not to worry. Then, I reminded her 3 more times not to forget to call a taxi because it was important for me to start going on time. I did the reminders because due to the football events the taxi waiting times could have been longer than usual. When I came to the reception at 8.45am it turned out that the she did not even care to do anything — she started calling a taxi only when I got downstairs with my luggage! At this moment the waiting time for the taxi was 35-45 minutes minimum (with no guarantee) so I had to run to a bus stop and then to take S-bahn and at the end was about 1h late for my meeting. The receptionist was absolutely ignorant, she did not apologise and told me that she does not care about my problems and that it is not her fault — unbelievable! This was the same lady whom I asked 4 times within 1.5h not to forget to call a taxi. I do not recommend anyone to stay in this hotel — it is a disaster.

  What could be improved: We were 3 people in 3 rooms, neither of them had air-conditioning. There were units, but neither of them worked. We could not reach anyone due to our late arrival. The tap water was not pleasant to drink and there was no way to acquire something to drink. They charged us 6 breakfasts, despite us being 3 people (we were able to resolve this, when we discovered the mistake). The staff was partially polite but mostly unpleasant to talk with.
