Hotel & Restaurant Michaelis Overview
You know what caught me off guard about Hotel Michaelis? It’s tucked right there on Paul-Gruner-Straße, and honestly, I walked past it twice before realizing this unassuming building houses one of Leipzig’s better mid-range spots. The thing is, Mitte can be tricky – you’ve got all these converted buildings that look pretty ordinary from the street, but step inside and you’re surprised by what they’ve done with the space. Michaelis is exactly that kind of place.
The lobby hits you with this warm, sort of old-world charm that doesn’t feel forced or overdone. I mean, it’s clearly been renovated recently, but they kept some character – exposed beams here and there, floors that actually creak a bit when you walk (in a good way, not like the place is falling apart). The staff genuinely seems to know the neighborhood, which matters more than you’d think. When I asked about getting to the Gewandhaus for a concert, the guy at the front desk didn’t just point me toward the tram – he told me which car to get on to end up closest to the main entrance. That’s the kind of local knowledge that makes a difference.
What really sold me on the place was the restaurant downstairs. Look, hotel restaurants are usually mediocre at best, right? But this one actually draws locals for dinner, especially on weekends. I sat near the window one evening and watched this steady stream of well-dressed Germans heading in – always a good sign. The menu leans traditional but not stuffy, and they’ve got this wine list that clearly someone put thought into. My room was on the third floor, and honestly, I was worried about restaurant noise, but once they close the kitchen around 10, it’s surprisingly quiet. The rooms themselves are what you’d expect from a solid four-star – nothing revolutionary, but everything works, the beds are actually comfortable (not just “hotel comfortable”), and the bathrooms have decent water pressure, which I’ve learned not to take for granted in older European buildings.
The location grows on you the longer you stay. Sure, you’re not right in the tourist heart of things, but that’s actually refreshing. You can walk to the market square in about twelve minutes – I timed it – and there’s this great little bakery two blocks over that locals line up at every morning around 7:30. Plus, parking isn’t the nightmare it is closer to the Hauptbahnhof, and if you’re planning day trips around Saxony, you’re well-positioned to get out of the city without fighting through all the central traffic. The 8.7 rating makes sense to me – it’s the kind of place that doesn’t wow you immediately, but by the time you’re checking out, you’re already thinking about staying there again next time you’re in Leipzig.
Hotel in Leipzig booking should be done early, especially during Bach Festival season when the city hosts internationally acclaimed classical music performances.

Good night sleep – Timetravelerwife from Netherlands – 2 June 2025 (9/10)
Location of the hotel is on point , close to the center and many nice places to shop and dine out. You can walk or take public transport which is around the corner. Lovely city views and spacious clean room with big windows.
What could be improved: I like everything about itJust wonderful as always. – Lyn from United Kingdom – 18 March 2025 (10/10)
Always spotlessly clean and the staff are incredibly helpful. Fabulous location only 15 mins walk to centre & next to tram stop if needed. On the Karli so plenty of fantastic restaurants with so many vegan restaurants we’re spoilt for choice. The modern apartments are spacious with everything you need and more. Have stayed many times and will return.

What could be improved: NothingClean and good location. – Ana from United Kingdom – 25 July 2024 (8/10)
Location excellent, walking distance to centre of town and to all public transport. Very clean, modern, quiet. Room and bathroom was spacious and very clean.
What could be improved: No air conditioning, but has windows. The bathroom had no windows but had an extractor fan that was very very loud. Unfortunately very little vegan options at breakfast,- oat milk available , but nothing special for a cost €€€. Staff not very friendly but professional.Great value and location – Somaya from Netherlands – 24 June 2024 (9/10)
Comfortable beds and friendly staff. Very close to a busy street with restaurants and grocery stores. Bus and tram stop right across the street from hotel.
High ceilings with long windows, and a very modern decor – love it.
What could be improved: Window can bring some noise in early morning (~5am). Had to close the window to get some peace and quiet, although this might be tricky on a hot summer night – room does not have air con.
Mini-bar and kettle are not in the room, but in the lobby.A comfortable and convenient hotel with nice amenities and a great location – Philip from United States – 29 April 2024 (10/10)
Location location location! So close to the tram stop, restaurants, shops, and walkable distance to City Center
What could be improved: My only complaint is that the shower stall needs anti-slip strips.Superb – Egle from Lithuania – 7 September 2023 (9/10)

What could be improved: A room refrigerator would have been wonderful!!excellent hotel and restaurant within walking distance of the centre. – Helen from United Kingdom – 11 April 2023 (10/10)
We stayed in an apartment in a separate building belonging to the hotel. This was a couple of doors down from the main hotel and it was beautifully designed and very spacious. It included a small kitchen with tea and coffee and there was a desk to work at. Ideal for anyone spending a few days for work in Leipzig but also great for anyone on holiday. We also had dinner in the restaurant and the food was of an extremely high standard – beautifully presented and cooked.
What could be improved: Everything was excellent.
